Frequently Asked Questions
Why “Muslim Leaders of Tomorrow”? Why “Change from Within”?
Muslims are living in a pivotal period of enormous challenge and transformation. As debates rage over such issues as theology, identity, integration, pluralism, and globalization, Muslims seeking positive Islamic solutions must directly tackle this situation. If left unaddressed, others may fill the void by continuing to promote harmful ideologies, which will result in more violent reactions and social injustice for Muslims worldwide. It is time for Muslims all over the world, from East to West and North to South, to take ownership of our future and lead by example—we must recognize that effective, positive change must come from within.
What does it cost to attend the MLT 2009 conference in Doha?
All costs for the 2009 conference, including transportation, meals and accommodations, are covered graciously by the Doha International Center for Interfaith Dialogue.
Where and when is the MLT global conference held?
This year, the MLT Conference will be held at the Marriott Hotel in Doha, Qatar, from January 16-19, 2009. Conference dates and locations vary from year to year.
What do I get from being an MLT?
The MLT Program offers its members:
- The ability to network with individuals who share your passion for positive change
- Attendance at global and/or regional MLT meetings and conferences
- Membership in country and/or regional chapters
- Access to think thanks, influential leaders, and mentors in your field of work
- Updates on fellow MLTs’ work and their accomplishments
- Media alerts for crisis prevention strategies
- Leadership and media training
- Opportunities for increased visibility, such as inclusion in the Alliance of Civilizations’ Global Expert Finder database.
Can I nominate myself to be an MLT?
Yes, but ideally someone who knows you well should write your nomination form. If you can get a current MLT to nominate you, so much the better.
Who is the main organizer/sponsor behind the MLT Program?
The American Society for Muslim Advancement (ASMA) initiated the MLT Program in 2004. Today, MLT is a joint program of ASMA and Cordoba Initiative.
Can I be an MLT if I am over 45?
No, but we’re happy to welcome you as a Friend of the MLT. The MLT Program was established in part as a platform for emerging leaders – and though you can still make an impact at any age, youth is an important resource that emerging leaders draw upon. Current MLTs will “age out” of the program once they hit 45 years of age, though they are welcome to remain a part of the network and continue to participate in MLT activities.
How do I nominate someone?.
Just click the “Nominate” button on the MLT homepage! Or, you can contact the ASMA MLT Program Director here.
